What, Who, Why, When

The Tourism Sustainability Commitment aims to ensure economic, environmental and social sustainability becomes a genuine ethical underpinning of our industry.

Developed by industry for industry, it sets out 12 Commitments that individual businesses can achieve to progress our industry towards our vision of leading the world in sustainable tourism.

Any New Zealand tourism business or organisation can sign up to the Commitment. If you're a TIA member, the TSC is part of your membership. There is also an opportunity for organisations and businesses outside tourism to come on board as endorsers.

The aim is for every tourism business in New Zealand to commit to operating sustainably by 2025. The greater the buy-in, the more powerful it will be.

Acting responsibly now will equip the tourism industry to be successful in the long term.

Tourism 2025 & Beyond emphasises that to be sustainable, tourism must focus on growing value faster than volume. This will allow us to capitalise on the opportunities tourism offers, as well as mitigate risks that may impede the future wellbeing of the industry.

Sustainability provides numerous opportunities to grow the value of tourism businesses and the wider industry.

A well-managed, welcoming, innovative and sustainable business has greater appeal to visitors, who are increasingly demanding that businesses share and live their values. If you can’t demonstrate what you are doing in this space, you may well lose business.

Ultimately, for tourism, being sustainable is intertwined with creating value for New Zealand.

We want a New Zealand where our economy, people and environment are better off because tourism exists.

Project Team

The Commitment was developed by industry for industry.

TIA led the project with the support of an external reference group. We also talked with a range of other stakeholders and achieved wider industry input through consultation and workshops.
